Professional capabilities for Chinese medicine practitioners

The Chinese Medicine Board of Australia has released Professional capabilities for Chinese medicine practitioners (the professional capabilities).

The professional capabilities identify the knowledge, skills and professional attributes needed to safely and competently practise as an acupuncturist, and/or a Chinese herbal medicine practitioner and/or a Chinese herbal dispenser in Australia. They describe the threshold level of professional capability required for both initial and continuing registration.

As part of the development of the professional capabilities, the Chinese Medicine Accreditation Committee (the Committee) undertook an extensive period of preliminary and public consultation.

In November 2019, the Committee recommended the Professional Capabilities for Chinese medicine practice to the Board. The Board considered and approved the professional capabilities at its December 2019 meeting.

The Board asks that practitioners:

  • read through the new Professional capabilities for registered Chinese medicine practitioners
  • identify any areas where you may not meet the minimum requirements, and
  • establish and implement a plan for continuing professional development (CPD) that addresses those gaps
